Church of the Incarnation has been sending adult mission teams to Honduras since the year 2000. Honduras is the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, second only to Haiti. Teams of approximately 35 missioners work under the guidance and at the request of the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Honduras, The Right Reverend Lloyd Allen. This summer our team will be working in the Siguatepeque community which is half way between the two major cities of Honduras- San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa. The population of this community is about 40,000. Our team will be providing: Christian Education; construction of much needed classrooms at an Episcopal school; and a medical/dental/pharmacy clinic. Spanish speaking skills are helpful, but not required. What is required is a willingness to serve our less fortunate brothers and sisters and to share Christ’s love.
Seven years ago, Larry Tate was sitting in church and heard the announcement about the upcoming Honduras Mission trip. He had heard about the trip many times before but for some reason, this time it resonated with him that he had to go on this trip. Due to scheduling conflicts, he was unable to go but he attended the trip’s “Packing Day” and left miserable knowing that he needed to be on that trip. Since that time, Larry has been on every Honduras Mission trip and has served as one of the trip leaders for the past two years. He says that what he has learned from these trips is much different than what he expected. He learned humility and that when one goes to serve in Christ’s name, he or she shouldn’t expect anything in return; however, what happens is one returns with many lessons learned and a renewal of the heart.
Volunteers are needed to aid in light construction or related work projects, teach vacation Bible school stories and do arts and craft activities with the children. The team needs medical doctors, nurses, and dentists to assist in the medical/dental clinic. This is a crucial component to the trip as the people from that area do not have access to adequate medical care. Also, the mission team sets up a pharmacy and needs volunteers to assist with setting up and tracking the inventory.
