RECAP: 2017 Community Health Fair
Thank you so much for a successful 2017 Community Health Fair! It is so rewarding to see how the community pulls together to deliver FREE much needed services to the our neighbors. With music blaring, Zumba class dancing and McGruff mingling there was an atmosphere of fun and fellowship.
Together we served about 300 people with 75 sports physicals, 155 immunizations and 68 dental exams, but this isn’t the whole story. Of the ten organizations that contributed time and talent, almost all have been involved for eight years, since the inception of the Health Fair. Twenty five families walked away with a bike, helmet and lock; 75 others took home bike helmets. Every family received a reusable grocery bag with fruit, water and a soccer ball, as well as other health information.
You may not know that we also provide spring sports physicals to athletes that begin competing before the Health Fair. Another notable event was that between our spring sports physicals and the actual health fair, three students were identified with serious health conditions and subsequently were referred to Children’s Hospital. These cases would probably not have been identified otherwise.
We are thankful for our partners: Caring for Children Foundation CareVan, Dallas County Medical Society Alliance, Texas A&M Dental School, Spokes for Folks, DISD, North Dallas Shared Ministries, North Dallas High School LULAC Council, Future Champs of Texas, Dallas Police Central Patrol Division and Dallas Fire Department. Of course, the day would not be complete without our fabulous emcee CJ Johnson, Stephanie Kirby Zumba instructor, Diabetes testing, and health information booths. The efforts of 176 volunteers from partners all over the city came together for one amazing two hour health fair!
