Sermons on “Politics”
Patriotism—the love of our land, our country, that which is ours—is a good thing, provided it does not usurp our love for Jesus. The Bible shows nations (not mere individuals) coming to Jerusalem at the end times, a view that is, perhaps surprisingly, captured in the final stanza of “O beautiful, for spacious skies.”
The figure of Daniel gives us encouragement to work hard in the world, while reminding us that there are always dangers and we must remember that our first allegiance is to God. God vindicated Daniel, even as he later vindicated Jesus, raising him from the pit of death, and even as, please God, he will someday raise us.
