Music Information for Sunday, October 6

Leo Sowerby stands out as one of the finest American choral composers of the 20th century, effectionaly called the "Dean of American Church Musicians" during his lifetime. His distinctive compositional voice blends jazz harmonies with colorful organ accompaniments, showcasing the rich textures of American symphonic instruments.

Tonight's setting of the Nunc Dimittis is particularly moving, featuring a unique, serene diminuendo that leads into the "Glory be to the Father," culminating in a profound wave of peace. Gerre Hancock, the longtime director of music at St. Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue, elevated the choir to remarkable heights. He, too, crafted a uniquely American sound through his innovative organ playing and compositions, incorporating jazz idioms and American folk tunes and spirituals. Together, their contributions have left a lasting legacy on Episcopal church music.

* During the summer, Choral Evensong is on hiatus from Memorial Day to Labor Day weekend.
