The centurion has a deep insight into the nature of authority: that you can exercise it only if you are also under authority. He sees this in Jesus, and Jesus marvels. We see Jesus' authority in his brave reaching forth his hand to touch the man with a contagious disease, a man no one else wanted to touch.
